Established in 1998 by Action-Housing, Inc. for the purpose of providing scholarships to the clients of ACTION-Housing's program and services and/or their children who are studying social work, communications, journalism, psychology or related courses. An advisory committee will suggest the students selected.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Below are the minimum requirements to be considered for the award. Eligible applicants must meet each of the following requirements to be considered for the award:

  1. The scholarship applicant should be a needy individual, or one of their dependents. The applicant may be a client of ACTION-Housing, Inc., or another nonprofit or social service agency, and should be referred to us by a staff member of that nonprofit or agency, or by an ACTION-Housing staff member.

  2. The scholarship applicant must demonstrate need by meeting certain financial criteria. That income criterion is 80% or lower of HUD area median household income, as determined by family size (please see current HUD income guideline chart below).

  3. The applicant’s prior year’s tax return and current paystubs, or proof of unemployment, must be submitted with the application and will be accepted as proof of income. If the applicant is financially supported by their parents, and was claimed as a dependent on a parents’ prior year tax return, then the parents’ prior year tax return and current paystubs, or proof of unemployment, must be submitted to determine financial need.

  4. The scholarship should help the awardee attain a necessary step towards self-sufficiency, with an emphasis on education; such as a Bachelor’s degree, Associate degree, trade school or technical school diploma, or other post-secondary training program.

  5. Scholarships may be awarded towards a trade school or technical school certificate or diploma, an Associate degree, or a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants already possessing a Bachelor’s degree will not be eligible for assistance, as this indicates that the applicant has already achieved the necessary step towards self-sufficiency.
